Evidently we've broken a record for lack o' rain in July. On the one hand, that's kind of nice. On the other...

So, here's something pithy-ish about running - it's a lot like dancing. In both, your feet always have to remain under your body. This is something that beginners in both activities usually miss. For the runners, it can result in knee pain (or worse) because of over striding. For the dancers, it makes them late on their moves. Which means, of course, that they're soon far off the beat and frustrated.

Interestingly, the same doesn't seem to be true of fencing. There, you're constantly extending your front or back leg as you advance and retreat. To say nothing of lunging. Hmmm......

I'm trying to come up with something pithy to write about having taken up running again after a nearly 6 year lay-off. I'll start with the easiest thing - I do it because I enjoy it. I stopped because, for a while there, I didn't.

If I have any other brilliant thoughts, I'll let you know.

Another scene from the Mall of Bankruptcy. This place lasted a mere couple of months.

Who knew? Evidently loading docks aren't "one size fits all".

The general idea behind this photograph (assuming there actually is one) might be "comfort". Something that's probably in short supply in Washington at the moment.

And, this just in from Stupid World.

No, I haven't gone totally over to the fossil fuel side. They're just trailers. And, I do wonder what "OOCL" stands for.

What is it with Obama and his team that they'd fire someone on the word of FOX Snews? I mean, I like Obie, but, come on, kids - show some spine.

In. Out. And a typo. Those were the good old days of house building.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Taken from the bicycle portion of a bridge over the Fraser River. And then I bought a car. Yep, a complete(-ish) 180.

I'm a very unlikely person to quote Nancy Reagan, but she did get one thing right: Just say "No". The notion that the Nitwit From the North is someone whose endorsement anyone would seek is a fine combination of unbelievable and unbearable. The South may not rise again, but the truly stupid sure seem to be taking their best shot at taking over.

So, how come the news isn't awash with "Dick Cheney's Non-Existent Heart Has Stopped Working!" news? I love that, thanks to the type of artificial pump they've had to implant, Cheney's no longer got a pulse. Yep, he really is among the un-dead. Frankly, I'm waiting for the removal of the "un-".

Three words I don't think I ever really expected to see together, "Gentle Care, Laser". It's amazing what you'll see while staring out the window of a bus.

Well, I'm beat. Who knew flipping a slender metal stick around for an hour could be so tiring?

Amazing what people can do with a simple sheet of plywood, isn't it?

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Yep, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" was darn good. The movie, that is.

I guess this should be filed under, "Same planet, different worlds," but, of course, well, not terribly original, right? Yeah, well....

Peter works in the college's AV department, but his real love is music. He's one of those people who can play almost anything you put in his hands, though his current choices appear to be guitar, violin and accordion. When I took this shot, he was playing what sounded like a Sousa march. His audience of one didn't seem especially impressed. Her loss.

So, what I forgot to mention in yesterday's post was that, next Wednesday, I get my very own sword! I'll have swash to buckle! Sadly, I have to buy it, rather than simply pull it out of some large stone. And I'd have made a great King of England, let me tell you.

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

Took my first fencing class tonight. Got to tell you, that's just darn fun. Not to mention tiring! Beginners start out with the foil, the littlest, skinniest sword of all. You'd be amazed how heavy that thing is by the end of your first class! I'm sure my hand is going to be cramped up into a useless claw tomorrow. Still.....whole lotta fun.

Another year down. When does the "wisdom" thing kick in?

Monday, July 05, 2010

This bit of graffiti seems to me to have religious overtones. Of course, that could just be due to its location, the Downtown Eastside, home to every kind of desperation known to prosperous North America. That sort of environment tends to foster religious inclinations, doesn't it?

The only part of high school math I enjoyed - geometry.

Now, that's a clean truck.

Someone commenting on some of my photos (posted on another site) described them as "...so eerie, yet so mundane in their subject matter". Yep, pretty much describes the world as I see it.
